در ابتدا متن اول :
The most dramatic of all vaccination procedures was finally adopted by Pasteur for the human disease hydrophobia rabies.
Attenuation of the virus in this case was achieved by drying spinal cords taken from infected rabbits، in air.
He was able to show that daily injection of the emulsion of such infected spinal cords، which were later changed to cords dried for a shorter period of time ، not only protected dogs from fully virulent virus ، but also from the disease induced by injection of rabid saliva ( street virus ).morever in order to be of practical service ، vaccination had to work even when started after the virulent virus was already present in the body]
The disease fortunately has an unusually long incubation period of 1-3 months. The experiment of vaccinating a dog after it had a rabid bite showed protection to be possible ، if done early in the incubation period.
After these carefully planned preliminary experiments، the chance to test the procedure on a human patient arrived in july 1885 when a boy، joseph meister ، was brought to Pasteur with severe and multiple bites from a dog which was certainly rabid.
The first of the series of thirteen injections of spinal cord emulsions was given on the third day after the bites.
They boy survived ، later to become the gate-porter of the Pasteur institute in paris.
