TEHRAN: A landmark deal that curbs parts of Iran's disputed nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief will take effect from January 20 Tehran and Western powers said Sunday

US President Barack Obama welcomed the news but warned there was still a rough road ahead to clinch a comprehensive deal

Western nations and Israel have long suspected Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapons capability alongside its civilian programme charges the Islamic republic fiercely denies

Tehran agreed in November to roll back parts of its nuclear work and halt further advances in exchange for the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets and limited relief from sanctions that have choked its economy

Queiroz believes the passion for football in Iran can help them spring a surprise or two in Brazil

Iranians have football in their blood and soul. You don't need to promote football through marketing here, he said of a country that has enjoyed considerable success at youth level as well as in futsal and in beach soccer

It is amazing to see that -- with so few resources and capabilities -- the federation has achieved so much

With its potential, imagine what Iran could achieve if it had the resources of Qatar

When Queiroz took over as coach, he arrived to find a national federation that was :lethargic, lacking ambition

He tried to make changes, including bringing in Iranian players with dual nationality, such as Daniel Davari of Germany's Eintracht Braunschweig, Fulham midfielder Ashkan Dejagah, Dutch-Iranian striker Reza Ghoochannejhad and, most recently, American-born right-back Steven Beitashour of San Jose Earthquakes

However, his efforts were met with scepticism

In a conservative society like Iran, it is not easy to talk about reform and change of habits. It is not easy in Iran, not easy in other parts of the world

We cannot be competitive without international experience. The only thing here similar to professional football is that at the end of the month, players get their salary

But my commitment to Iranians is to make them happy. This is our World Cup, this is our time to tell the world that Iran is a football county

WASHINGTON - President Obama's effort to reassure the nation that the government's practice of amassing the private phone records of millions of Americans can be responsibly reformed faces a tangle of technical, logistical, and political problems that will make solutionselusive. And largely beyond his control.Among the challenges is stiff resistance from phone companies that do not want to be told how long to hold their customers' data if the government does not collect it, especially if that means longer than they do now.The companies do not have the data-sifting capabilities of the National Security Agency, which holds the records and uses them to sift for terrorist connections. The political challenges may be particularly daunting. The president says he wants to move the data out of the government's hands. That has positioned him between two extremes. At one end is a collection of tea party Republicans and civil liberties Democrats who want the government to end its bulk collection of Americans' records, not just shift where the data are stored. At the other end are powerful lawmakers, including the chairmen of the intelligence committees, who have resisted any substantial changes

Report: Cancer Rates on the Rise

The cancer agency of the World Health Organization says in a new report that cancer cases are expected to surge 57 percent worldwide in the next two decades, leading to increased need for prevention techniques

The World Cancer Report, released Tuesday, predicts what it says will be a"human disaster." It says new cancer cases will rise from an estimated 14 million in 2014 to 22 million annually within the next 20 years. Cancer deaths are likewise expected to rise, from 8.2 million a year to 13 million annually. The rise in cancer rates, which is attributed to an aging population, necessitates a heavier focus on preventive public health policies such as smoking reduction, lowering consumptionof alcohol and sugary foods, and more screening programs
The study says infection-triggered cancers such as cervical and liver cancers should be prevented with wider use of vaccines. The report says the cost of increasing cancer rates will disproportionately affect developing countries, which have the fewest resources to deal with health policy matters. It says the problem in those populations is complicated by people living longer and growing more susceptible to cancers associated with industrialized lifestyles

More than 60 percent of the world's cancer cases occur Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, and these areas account for about 70 percent of the world's cancer deaths

The study notes that the most commonly occurring cancers are lung cancer, breast cancer, and large bowel cancer. After lungcancer, which is the most lethal, the most cancer deaths were caused by liver and stomach cancer

The World Cancer Report is produced about once every five years. It involves a collaboration of about 250 scientists frommore than 40 countries

Only a matter of time until Lionel Messi returns to top form, according to Luis Suarez

    10/02/14 11:17am

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is backing Barcelona playmaker Lionel Messi to return to his free-flowing best after returning from injury

Messi spent 59 days on the sidelines witha torn muscle, but bagged a third brace since his return in January as Barcelona beat Sevilla 4-1 on Sunday

Last month, the Argentina forward scored twice against Getafe in both legs of their Copa del Rey tie, before netting a penalty as Barcelona endured a La Liga defeat to Valencia

However, despite already scoring seven goals since his return, Suarez believes Messi requires support as he readjusts to life after injury

Messi needs the help of his teammates, Suarez said during an interview on theEsports en Xarxaprogramme on Catalan radio: Now, in this delicate moment, his teammates have to give him ahand. He has done everything for the team for a long time, he gave a lot from the team and now he needs help

High-Proteins Food Good For Elderly, Bad For Middle-aged

    March 5th, 2014

If you are consuming high levels of protein, it does not mean it is always good for you. A new research says it is bad for the middle-aged people, but good for the elderly

The study is published in the Cell Metabolism journal and it says fortifying one’s diet with more protein-rich foods extends the life of elderly people

Researchers studied for past 18 years to find the effects of high-protein food. Theysay middle-aged Americans who consumed such food to the highest level were four times more likely to die of diabetes or cancer, and two times as likely to die of any cause compared to those with lowest protein in their diets

However, the study reveals high-protein diet had opposite effect on those Americans who were of 66 years age and above. The researchers say those elderly whose diets were rich in protein were 60 percent less likely to die of cancer and 28 percent less likely form any cause compared to other people
same age group whose diets had lowest level of proteins

Chicago dad, Christopher Kaelin, has scored a hat trick — he won the same lottery three times in three consecutive weeks for a grand total of $276,000The 31-year-old even made a mistake with his third big win on the Illinois Lotterywhen he mis-read the amount as $25,000dollars instead of $250,000He said: "At first we were just 'oh my God.'It was a feel-good moment, we just couldn't believe it," when he won his first$25,000 on a scratch-off ticket in early April

My fiancé and I were so thrilled we went out for dinner to celebrate. When we stopped at a gas station, I decided to buy another instant ticket and won $1,000.With Lady Luck on his side he returned a week later to the same newstand and purchased a ticket which revealed what he thought was a $25,000 win only to realize it was far greater

His immediate plans are sensible and include paying off student loans, buying a house, paying for his wedding and saving for his daughter's college fund. "It's life changing in the sense that you don't have to go into debt for a wedding or to buy a house," he says

Magnificent blue glow of Hong Kong seas also disturbing

    Associated Press

Eerie fluorescent blue patches of water glimmering off Hong Kong's seashore are magnificent, disturbing and potentially toxic, marine biologists say

The glow is an indicator of a harmful algal bloom created by something called Noctiluca scintillans, nicknamed Sea Sparkle

It looks like algae and can act like algae. But it's not quite. It is a single-celled organism that technically can function as both animal and plant

These type blooms are triggered by farm pollution that can be devastating to marine life and local fisheries, according to University of Georgia oceanographer Samantha Joye, who was shown Associated Press photos of the glowing water

"Those pictures are magnificent. It's just extremely unfortunate that the mysterious and majestic blue hue is created by a Noctiluca," Joye wrote in an email Thursday

This is part of a problem that is growing worldwide, said Joye and other scientists

Noctiluca is a type of single-cell life that eats plankton and is eaten by other species. The plankton and Noctiluca become more abundant when nitrogen and phosphorous from farm run-off increase

Unlike similar organisms, Noctiluca doesn't directly produce chemicals that can attack the nervous system or parts of the body

But recent studies show it is much more complicated and links them to blooms that have been harmful to marine life. Noctiluca's role as both prey and predator can eventually magnify the accumulation of algae toxins in the food chain, according to oceanographer R. Eugene Turner at Louisiana State University
